In this Podcast series you will encounter different approaches of looking at El Dorado and the narrative utopia it creates. El Dorado will for instance be viewed from a literary perspective. Here there will be looked at the multiple allusions to the El Dorado space in literature of different historical periods. The specific properties of this space will be analyzed in terms of geography, time and function in relation to the character. Also El Dorado will be approached from a historical and political perspective where there will be looked at how the mythical place of El Dorado affected historical international relations. Besides a political historical perspective, El Dorado will also be viewed from a economic historical perspective. Here the focus will be on how the myth inspired economic expansion and on the harsh aspects of the economic reality. And lastly, El Dorado will be looked at from a rather media and culture based point of view where there will be looked at how this utopic space can influence society and how its ongoing circulation in popular media products in current society can tell something about its meaning. In general El Dorado will be considered from a humanities perspective, devided into utopian and dystopian perspectives and reality based and filosophical perspectives.
